News and Notables
A little research on Crossland H.S. name. It is named after Alicia Crossland's family. She was Leonard Calvert's wife. As we all know Leonard Calvert was the first Lord of Baltimore. If you did not know this so what. Her family goes back to Adam de Crosseland about 1195. The Maryland flag is a merger of the Calvert and Crossland coat-of-arms (a story unto itself). My wife is related to the to the Calvert's and thus the Crossland's. She attended Crossland. So, she went to a school named after her relatives. How cool is that. Is it not great being retired? I must point out the first Lord of Baltimore was really George Calvert Leonard's son. Neither ever set foot in Maryland. But George's son Leonard did, and he became the first governor of Maryland and hung out in St. Mary's City, Maryland. Alicia Crossland also never set foot in America or Maryland. Hey what the heck, it was obviously not a prerequisite for having a school named after you.
